About Me…

Hello!
I am a Mathematics and Science education researcher currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
While my research interests vary greatly, most of my work focuses on the role of technology in undergraduate education. At RIT, I am focused on the use of computation (i.e., technological tools used to solve problems), and I am particularly interested in the identification, assessment, and improvement of students’ enacted computational literacy.
If you want to hear more about that or any of my other projects, please check out my CV (available at the bottom of this page) for some of my recent publications.

Over my career, I have had the opportunity to work on some wonderful projects with some wonderful people!
During grad school, I was a member of the Project MathTalk team at San Diego State University. In this project, we designed, filmed, and implemented dialogic videos. Dialogic videos are a novel kind of instructional video containing students actually learning and discussing mathematics authentically.

If you are interested in seeing our videos, please check out our site!
Research stemming from this project has included inquiry into how students make sense of ideas from the dialogic videos, how resistance to ideas emerges in students’ work, and the application of a Bakhtinian lens on students’ processes of using the videos.

As a postdoc at RIT, I have had the opportunity to work with a group of cross-disciplinary education researchers asking questions relating to computational literacy (CL).

As a part of this team, we have had the opportunity to make international connections and work with the Center for Computing in Science Education, headed by Tor Odden, at the University of Oslo.

Our work on computation has produced an assessment framework of students’ enacted CL, a taxonomy of social CL activities for practicing scientists, and more…

Mentees

Over the summer of 2024 I had the opportunity to work with two REU students on projects relating to computational literacy.

Alissa Mitelman is an undergraduate student from university. During the summer REU, Alissa was between her third and fourth year of a 4+1 bachelor + master in mathematics education program.
Alissa worked on a project identifying students’ perceptions about the use of computation in their introductory probability and statistics courses. Having already presented her work at a regional conference for undergraduate’s research, Alissa will be presenting at a major national conference, Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME), next year!

Isabel White joined the Project MathTalk team during the penultimate year of my PhD program. Isabel and I worked together during the postproduction of the algebraic unit. As a part of our work together, we were able to present at multiple teaching conferences where we had the opportunity to ideate about the implementation of dialogic videos into classroom settings.
Currently Isabel is analyzing her dissertation data, which used our algebraic videos in a teaching experiment setting.

Personal Life

I am extremely passionate about climbing, baking, and my dogs.
I started rock climbing during my master’s program. I found it to be the perfect mix of physically and mentally stimulating. It also gives me a reason to get out into nature!
Like many, I took to baking during the pandemic, but the passion has not abated. I am always looking for an excuse to bake something, which is a dangerous combo with my sweet tooth… Invariably, this passion coincides with a love of GBBO (The Mighty Boosh connection doesn’t hurt, either).
Most importantly, my partner and I have two Australian shepherds, Meadow (on the right) and Forest (on the left). We try to keep them stimulated with dog agility, but they have energy for days… they’re the best :)
